Description

On Mount Zion, Jerusalem, Israel. King David`s tomb, the place of the Last Supper, a 14th century Franciscan church, and a mosque co-exist on the Mountain summit. The `Coenaculum` in this complex is where Christ is believed to have re-appeared after his resurrection. It is also identified as the "upper room" in which the Holy Spirit descended upon the Disciples at Pentecost (Acts 2:2-3). The ground-floor room beneath the Coenaculum contains a cenotaph that since the 12th century has been known as the "Tomb of King David" - even though the recorded burial place of the king was in the "City of David" on the Ophel Ridge (1 Kings 2:10). In the cellar near King David's Tomb is the Chamber of the Holocaust, a room lit by candles dedicated to the memory of the six million Jews slain by the Nazis.
In 1524 the site was turned into a mosque of "the Prophet David."
