I liked the presentation of this old bonsai, against the vertical slats of the wood screen.
Another bonsai is blurred out, visible through the gaps, behind the screen.

I have always been fascinated by bonsai. This is a lovely photo. This old tree has wonderful character and your thought presents it so well. Great color and detail. #4229062Chris Budny April 30, 2007
Thank you, folks! The collection of trees at the National Arboretum is worth a peek, if you're ever in DC! #4231080Mick Burkey May 02, 2007
I like the tones on this one, Chris, and the comp. Wonder if the tree would be even better highlighted if the bg slats were more out of focus. I find them a bit distracting. But you might lose the contrast in subjects you are trying for. #4240542Chris Budny May 03, 2007
Thanks, Mick... I may be back there next Saturday; I'll have to give another look. In this image, the bonsai was sitting about 2 feet in front of the panels; I'm not sure if I could achieve more DOF blurring... maybe it will give me a Photoshop exercise! #4242168Tamera S. Phillips May 23, 2007

Hi Chris..congrats on your finalist. I read your bio and it seems your investment has already paid off. Was it difficult to get started with an SLR? I have a Canon Powershot S3...and am looking forward to the transition to an SLR...but am a bit nervous too. Great work! Lynn #4324631Don Johnson May 24, 2007

Thank you Sue! The National Arboretum has a spectacular bonsai collection, and they often rotate them around; the next visit I made, this tree was no longer in front of the screen. #4335644Lorri Shane May 28, 2007
