We took a water taxi to Lake Bled Island; this is the landing dock. There is quite an interesting story about these boats, called "pletnas". When the church was first built on the island, people would come from all over to attend services at the church creating quite a bit of chaos with boat traffic. The Lord of the Land decreed that only twelve families would have the right to operate water taxis, and to this day, only descendants of the original twelve familes can operate these taxis. Another interesting note: when couples marry at the church, the groom must carry his bride up these stairs...without stopping!

I'm in love. I want to live there. Where are we again, Ann? A dream???I love the charming rules and traditions this place carries and keeps. Wonderful. Like a fairly tale.
(Guess the women have to really watch their weight until after they get married! HA! That poor GROOM otherwise!)

The image alone would be superb all on its own, but your description enhances it even more! An early example of Government controlling private enterprise! #9056551Robert R. Goodman November 22, 2010

Most interesting information along with a fantastic capture Ann. The only Lord of the land I have is Oscar, he orders me to let him lay on my lap when siting. #9056706frank w. degenhardt November 22, 2010

First thing I noticed about this beautiful capture were the lovely stairs, thinking they might be tough walking all the way to the top. Then after reading your wonderful info , find out that the poor grooms have to carry their brides all the way to the top! The marriage rate must be very low LOL..John Connolly November 22, 2010
