Thank you Carol :-)

Some of the most beautiful scenes here are mountains with back lighting but I'm still learning and find it very difficult to get detail and color in the foreground without washing out the bright, even with manual aperature and shutter. Any hints would be appreciated! #17581

Hi Gary. I wish I had some great advise for you, but I am pretty much at the same point myself. The only thing I know to do (which you probably already do) is to bracket your shots and keep good notes on the settings you use. That way when something works, you will know what you did. Are you metering your shots? Sometimes people take an average between the two meter readings. You might try and ask this question in the Q&A section. There are usually several very helpful people on this site. Good luck! #17599

Gary--I just checked the Q&A section and there is a question about shoting into the sun that might be helpful for you. #17602

Carol...thank you for your comments and for going out of your way to look for answers! When you suggested bracketing, it dawned on me that my new Sony DSC F707 has an automatic bracketing feature where you set the ranges and it shoots 2 extra shots bracketed around your present settings. I need to start trying that. Since its a digital camera I don't have to worry about recording settings either as the EXIF data tells all. The Q&A section didn't help much as it was geared toward portrait shooting. I think I just need to shoot a lot of practice shots and see what works best for the this camera.

Thanks again :-)

Aren't digital cameras wonderful. I was never good about writing down my settings, and the auto bracketing makes things easy. I agree that practice is the best way to learn--good luck. If you figure out all the answers on this one, let me know OK. #17658

Congratulations on your photo of the day win with this! I have never even come close to doing that even with many attempts. If you are just learning, you are obviously on the right track! #18246
