Tammy, it is similar. Here is an explanation (not mine):
Canada day is the anniversary of July 1st, 1867,which is when the enactment of The British North America Act united 3 British Colonies into a single Country called Canada.This was done within the British Empire & the day was originally called Dominion Day!
The name was changed to Canada Day in 1982- the year Canada gained full independence from the British Empire!
