Happy Birthday Miss Liberty

Uploaded: November 29, 2011

Description

The Statue of Liberty is 125 years old as of October 28th, 2011. She is currently in the midst of a restoration effort. The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper. She is indeed an impressive sight and one that most certainly overwhelmed my father and my wife's parents upon their arrival to America.

Thank you Michelle. When my wife Sandy's father came here from Ireland Miss Liberty was but 8 years old. Did you know that the French Sculptor and designer of Miss Liberty, Frederic Bartholdi intended it as a monument to the freedom he found lacking in his own country. He said "I will try to glorify the Republic and Liberty over there, in the hope that someday I will find it again here." Of course he said that in French and I didn't know what he said until I was in high school. :0) #9837391
