Photography Question

Copyright Logo - How to Do It?

How does one put a copyright logo onto their photos? On printouts and on Web site pictures - with the photographer's logo and/or name? Might be a silly question, but this is something I would like to do. Thanks.

Hi, Mark! All I do is have a PS file that has my name and xopyright symbol (c) (Alt + 0169) on it as a text layer. Saved as a psd file. I open that when I do my photos, and just use the move tool (double arrows) to click and drag it from there onto the photo in my "tray", then I move it on that photo to the position I want it to be in and save it as a JPEG. That flattens the photo file and your copyright symbol (c) is part of your photo. I know there are ways to create a brush or action to do this more quickly, but I haven't had time to learn it yet. Hope that helps!

  Hi Mark,

Laura's option works, but I have found that a much better option is to create a brush that will act like a stamp of whatever you have in the brush. It is more flexible than the other method as it's easier to place it where you want it, and to change it's size or color to fit the image.

Here are the steps to setup the brush (I'm using Photoshop CS2, but it should work on most versions of PS):

- Open a new blank document in Photoshop
- Create a new layer
- Press Shift-U a few times until you get the Custom Shape Tool (looks like an ameoba)
- In the Options bar, near the left you will see three small icons grouped together. Click the one farthest to the right (creates your shape using pixels rather than paths)
- Press Enter to bring up the Custom Shape Picker and scroll down until you see the copyright symbol. Select it and press the letter "D" to set your foreground colour to black.
- Using your mouse, drag out a copyright symbol in your document. Don't make it huge, as you will next have to place text beside it of the same size (unless you want to use a different size)
- Press "T" to switch to the Text Tool. Set your font & size in the options bar, and make sure the justification is set to Left Align.
- Click just to the right of your copyright symbol and type whatever you want (for example, I use "John Goldstein Photography"). If things aren't lined up exactly how you want them, then just use the Move Tool to move or resize things.
- Once you get it looking the way you want, press "M" to get the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Click and drag a selection around what you just produced (copyright symbol and text)
- Go to the Edit menu and choose DEFINE BRUSH PRESET.
- When the Brush Name dialog appears, give your brush a name and click OK. This adds your new brush to your brush library. Don't worry if the thumbnail looks squished...the brush won't be.
- Press "B" to get the Brush Tool, and in the Options bar click on the thumbnail to the right of the word "Brush". In the Brush Picker, scroll to the bottom of the brushes. The last brush is the one you just created. You can use the Preset Manager to drag it to the top of the list if you'd like.

Now just put it to use! Select that new brush, set the size/colour/opacity, and click once on an image where you want your name/copyright to appear.

I hope this helps! It has certainly saved me a lot of aggravation over the years.

Regards,
John

set up a saved metadata thingy in the file info. as well. for everyphoto you can apply the setting that have your info. quickly. that way the file itself has your "signature".
there's a cool thing in PS where you can go into the image processor and have it apply your saved metadata to every image you want. then you can set it up and let it run while you take a nap and your files will have all the info...
good stuff......

Ok, now I feel bad. I spent some time trying to do the great instructions that John provided, and STILL, can't do it. I have PS 4.0. Does anyone know if that makes a difference in the instructions provided by John?

This was a 'recipe' I received.

This is how I made mine.
1. Open a new file in Photoshop (I assume you use PS. There should be a similar method in Printshop or other photo editors.) Size the file to about 4" wida and 2" high.
2. Use the Text tool and select you desired font from the drop-down list. My signature was made with Vladimir Script (rather close to my actual signature). Type in your studio name. The copyright symbol can be made by Alt+0169.
3. When you get it looking like you want, go to the Edit menu and select "Define Brush." Type in a name for the new brush such as "Studio Stamp."
4. Stamp your photo by selecting the brush tool and scrolling down to find "studio stamp" and place it on your photo.
That's exactly the way I do it. You can also rotate your canvas to 45 degrees that way your text is angled, then do your select and define brush.
TO CREATE A SIGNATURE BRUSH:
OPEN PS AND GO TO FILE AND THEN NEW
SIZE YOUR NEW DOC. TO WIDTH 7" AND HIGHTH 3" WHITE BACKGROUND
THEN CHOOSE TEXT TOOL AND SIZE -I DID MINE AT 48
THEN SELECT ALL AND GO TO TRANSFORM AND TILT IT (IF YOU WANT)
THEN GO TO EDIT - TO DEFINE BRUSH- CHOOSE A TITLE- (AFTER MANY TRYS) THE NAME THIS IS UNDER IS EXTRA LG STUDIO BRUSH 2005
THEN EVERY TIME YOU NEED TO STAMP A PICTURE WITH YOUR NAME
JUST GO TO THE BRUSH TOOL- SCROOL DOWN TILL YOU FIND IT AND -STAMP WHERE YOU WANT IT- CCCOOOOOL!!

I've tried that +0169 and I just cannot get it to work - so the above does it for me, although I can never get the brush to STAY - i.e. when I move to different types of brushes and look for it again, I can't find it, so I then have to redefine it!!

Thanks Robyn! Everything works..... except when you go to click on, "to define brush" it's not highlighted, therefore you cannot click on it to name your new brush.... whats up??

Great tip & instructions John! I just created two stamps... one with © & my name... the other reads "PROOF - do not copy"

And it took some playing around, but I figured out how to change the color of the brush to use a different color for different photos. Meaning... black may not work for all photos.

I'm still very much a newbie to PS7 and that was an awesome tip!!!!

Not sure Mark, how did you save it? I've saved mine as a jpeg - i.e. open a doc., type for eg 2006, save as a jped. Then when I open PS, and can't find it - I select a brush lets say a Hard, Round 13 pixels, I go back up to Open, find the document, then go to edit, define brush or pattern - never to sure which is which, but this is how I muddle through!

I can't even get to the point where you save it. I can't click on the define brush. I have PH 4.o, is that what you are using?

So glad you sorted out Mark :) Aaron, I've never got it right with the 0169, not sure if its Ctrl or alt, and the do you actually type the + or what, I just use the brush and a symbol

you hold down alt, then type 0169. it's not just for photoshop. it's a standard for many programs. the plus is usually when they say alt +0169, meaning that you should hold down the alt key. (plus meaning "in addition to")

When I hit shift U to get the custom shape tool, the copyright symbol was in the brush selection box without me having to alt, "plus" 0169. So, since it was selected, I just placed it on my page/image.
