Sharp Subject, Blurred Background I have seen photos in which it seems that there are two different focus points - one end of a zoom range to the other - as in some sports. The subject is in sharp focus with the background out of focus. How is this scene set up?

I think that you are confusing focusing with depth of field. A lot of sport photos are shot with telephoto lens at large apertures (F4.0), giving a shallow depth of field so that only a short distance in front and behind the focused object is sharp.

Could be a panning shot maybe? Like of a sports car moving fast... You just set a bit of a medium speed and then snap the picture on the moving object while 'tracking' it [move the camera while the shutter is still depressed]. It'll make the object look 'still' and the background like it's moving. Is that what you were looking for?
