I'm taking pictures at a play in a dark gymnasium with 400 b/w film. I tried one role but the results were awful. Should I be using a different ISO film? What about the flash?

Never use a flash when shooting a play, it's distracting to the actors and other folks watching. You need either a higher ISO film or longer shutter speeds. Try pushing Tri-X up a bit, maybe a step or two. You can order higher ISO film or buy it from a well supplied camera shop. If your developing yourself you could take color shots with a good film and then either process them in color yourself or have a shop do it. Then print the enlargements in B & W. That's how I usually get good quality.
