On the Verge

Hi, am on the verge of buying a new camera. Went thru a lot of Web sites for advice. Got some nice ones & got some confusing ones. Wanted to buy a SLR 35mm. Went & checked out a Canon EOS 300 with 28mm 80 zoom f3.5 USM. Kinda Liked it. But a very interesting & confusing question was read by me on one of those Web sites saying that if you want to buy a 28mm 80 f3.5 lens, then why not buy a p & s camera. The site says it's better to buy a SLR with a minimum of f1.2 lens. Otherwise no use wasting money on such a setup - a point which made me ponder. An other bit of material I read was that Minolta makes the best bodies, Nikon makes the best lenses & Canon makes the best compromise. Can you advise on how to go about this tough dilemma of buying a good camera? Last but not the least, I'm in love with Carl Zeiss lenses - even if I haven't used it, let alone, being near to one of those. Maybe it's due to all those great reviews. Not now, but in the future I'd love to buy a Carl Zeiss lens. Will Carl Zeiss lenses fit with all camera bodies? My budget for my new camera is around $400. Please advise.
