Assuming that you are mostly interested in recording memories, you want a camera that is easy to use, compact (easy to carry), and capable of handling indoor as well as outdoor situations well. If you do not want to get into photography as an art - if you don't want to be fiddling with dials and switches - I would recommend a high-quality point & shoot.
