what are the changes with BP Why has BP changed so much? Have been gone due to illness, but I am back now and don't know if we do everything the same. I have entered contests and some are good, but no one makes comments under your photo's like they used and EP's are few and far between. Also it seems that many of the people that we were on this site have left. So what's the new system for EP's.?

This has been discussed in some EP threads.... nobody knows why they are given so infrequently and unsystematically, and this may be one of the reasons why some people have left.

I empathize you both. I have found that the editors are not looking as frequently. Perhaps they are only meeting once a month to review images. Comments are also few and far between even for folks who have picts in the finalist category. Not the same old BP anymore.

If you want to remove or move your pictures to another place (in my computer), what do you have to do. Some of mine are older and I don't have any copies except in BP.

You can't get full size photos back to your computer from this site: you can download thumbnails and you can use Windows Snip or other software like that to 'make a snapshot' of the page with your photo open, so you'll get your photo of 800 pixels wide.

Joanne, I seem to recall awhile back, that one BP member had a fire and lost all his photos. He contacted BP and they were able to provide soft copies of images from their server. I don't recall the size of the images; they may have been the ones converted to 800 pixels. It's worth a shot...contacting BP direct.

Agree with Usman, 12 years being a BP member and 7 years into the contest – still like it!!

What's here to enjoy any more, especially in the contest? If images like this http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=13959117&catID=&style=&rowNumber=30&memberID=244931 even don't get an EP because somebody is too lazy to look at them? I renewed my portfolio last year and got 2 years for 1, so I'll stay until these expire, but if the situation will not normalize, I'm done here. Starting from March 2013, this is the most uncertain period here that I've experienced since September 2007 when I joined. This site certainly does not respect its customers, thus I've lost all respect toward it, too.

I can understand where you are coming from I finally got me a photo that is really awesome, but I can only wonder if vacations, family matters or something is going on. Don't give up yet, I have been here nine years and have had only 2 finalists and alot of EP's, I just enjoy being with other photographers.. Surly something will give soon! Happy Shooting everyone!!!! I love it here toooo!!!

No it's not the same BP anymore. As a beginner I was greatly encouraged by the EP's and it helped me to learn what made a good image. Now the EP's are few and far between. I've even had one given and taken away again! I have a feeling that they have cut back on staff and I wouldn't be surprised if the company folds altogether.

Change is something you can affect! I don't mean by clamoring for changes in BP, but by participation. I have come back here after several years away, and it seems like the same site to me. What I think would be positive for individuals to do is dedicate some time to interact. Like you are here in discussion, certainly, but also in looking at and commenting on other photographers work. It does not need to all be up to the management and staff to provide feedback. This is a community after-all. I suggest going and looking at some photo submissions and commenting on 2 or 3 a few times a week. You'll see interest on the rise. I'm going to do it right now! Richard

I comment many photos every day, but this will not affect the nature of the 'new' contest! Editors' Picks have been late since spring, and it seems that sometimes they are given randomly, but if a photo doesn't get it, a chance for getting a Finalist is gone.

I don't know that individuals are always the best judge of their own work. I know I have taken photos that I think are fantastic -- they fit my eye and perhaps I know more about the photo that makes it important to me -- and when I show it to others, they may not have the enthusiasm for the image that I do. But doubly it is hard to know what a judge is looking for. I have judged photo contests myself, and I remember one time judging a contest with a Mr. George Lepp at a rather large contest, and he and I became a little at odds over the winner. Each of the 3 finalists were outstanding images, but it was a print contest... and I could point to obvious flaws in two of the three prints. Well, we did not agree, and a third judge had an agenda to push sports photography. I'll just say that in that particular case, the results became political. My point here is that it is the editor picking. What they see and how they judge a photo may be quite different than your own opinion. What their criteria are and how they employ that can probably change day-to-day. For example, in the shot you post the link to here, I can see why you like it. The subject is neat, as is the framing. But I also wonder if it is as sharp as it can be, or as colorful. Take a look at the example of the original and with a little enhancement that I am posting here. That is just my eye. The change alone doesn't make it a winner. But if I were judging hundreds of photos in a day, I might pass over the shot depending on what I had seen (really even what order I see them in!), and the potential that was not rendered. That is not an absolute judgement on the photo, it is how I look at them. I am glad you are continuing to post comments on images, It is always nice to have some recognition. Maybe asking for feedback is a viable option as well? Members comments and constructive critique may lead you toward the coveted recognition of BP editors! Good luck! And keep at it! Richard
