Triggering Studio Lights I'm using Britek strobes with my Canon 10D Digital camera. I use a Wein safe sync on my hot shoe with a pc cord linking to the strobes. I'm forever having problems firing the strobes. It seems like the pc cord or safe sync is not making good contact. By fiddling around with the safe sync connection I can somtimes get them to fire. When they work, I get great pics. What can I do. Do I have to use the safe sync. I don't want to fry an expensive camera!

Hi Darrell I do not know why u need the safe sync cord for? When ur camera comes with a hotshoe u can get a sure fire when u mount any flash set at manual mode with the least power output tilted to the side or upwards. If the output is too strong, then have the reflector covered with tracing paper. Check the voltage of other makes. Usually they are safe. Using a red candy gel wrapper also makes it and infra red flash transmitter. I bought wein meter 2 mate to test my lights wirelessly from the flashmeter. Setting it off is no problem with any hotshoe flash.

If I had to guess, I would say that the Wein's hot shoe connection is not making good contact all the time. I have a Wein infra-red trigger that I need to slide on and off the camera's hot shoe several times,...then wiggle it around a little before it will fire. (It can be really frustrating sometimes.) Those p/c cords are pretty reliable, especially if you crimp the female end (very gingerly) before attaching it to the p/c outlet. I've also done what Ishak suggested with a low-powered, hot-shoe mounted flash pointed straight up. The light output does not affect the scene, but is enough to activate optical slaves attached to the other units.

just bend the pin in the cord a little so it makes contact with the inside edge of the adapter hole. I used the pointed tip of a generic can/bottle opener. And a red colored gel just makes it a red light. There's infra red in all flash light.
