Photography Question

Stabilizing/holding reflectors, etc.

Is there any kind of reflector holding arm/stand sturdy enough to use outdoors?

My husband made John Siskin's light panel for me (instructions on BP site), and it's great. But, either the wind here is too strong or I haven't fitted the sheet properly because it turns into a sail every time I try to use it outdoors.

I've looked at reflector holding arms on eBay but read comments about them stating they're really flimsy in even the slightest breeze.

If I can't shoot outdoors, I'd still like to get a holding arm that's sturdy for holding fairly large (say, 36" or even 48") reflectors indoors. I have a light stand, but it's not heavy duty so I'd probably need to get another of those, too.

Alien Bees has one. I'm not sure if that's what you are looking for, or if it will be any better on a windy day. Have a look at www.alienbees.com and click on Reflectors.

Your husband's arms are the best holding arms ;) Just kidding.

You can try to add weight to the stand, for example, your camera bag, if it's not too windy. Just a thought.

Andy, good idea--I'll try that with the light stand. (I use bricks on the feet of the light panel--it's made of PVC pipe--and they work well to keep it from falling over completely.)

Chris, thanks for the tip! I went to Alien Bees--wow, that reflector arm is so cheap! I think I was looking at one from Amvona that was three times the price. For the Alien Bees price, I almost can't afford *not* to try it! :D
