How to use a 50mm f1.4d lens

I am new to this site and learning how to use it, I was wondering if anyone could help me!! I just bought a 50mm f1.4 lens Nikon (I shoot with a NIkon d50) and I am not sure how to set the aperature. I am only able to set it to the smallest setting 16, when I try and manually stop it down the screen flashes f EE. The aperature does change with the light when in the 16 setting, but shouldn't I be able to set it to a larger aperature manually? I hope someone can give me some guidance, I would greatly appreciate it. I am so in awe of this site's talent, I have so much to learn!! Thank you,

Mary

consult the manual. Sounds like the flashing ee is the exposure warning that the shutter speed is set to match f/16, and you changed the aperture without changing the shutter speed.
There's a dial there somewhere that you turn to change apertures.

Read the manual. The D50 can only control the lens aperture by using the controls on the camera. Set the lens aperture ring to the smallest aperture (largest f-number). This allows auto aperture operation by the camera. You then set the aperture you want with the camera controls in A or M exposure modes.
