SD card malfunction

My memory card suddenly has decided not to work - it says "card cannot be used" when put in either my Nikon D80 or my computer. What is the best way to recover the photos on this card - if you can even? There ar a few awesome images that are irreplaceable. Any help would be great.

Hugo – can you supply some more info, please? Which type of memory card? Which manufacturer? Most of the major players offer recovery programs that can recover images from their cards. If the card does not come with this software you can, generally, download it from their website. Have you tried the card in another camera (if available) or another card reader? I was having an odd problem with my CF card or camera (I wasn’t sure which) and it turned out to be the card reader.

Irene: Hugo said it is an SD card, and that it didn't work in the camera or the computer. It doesn't matter which manufacturer, because all sd cards are fundamentally the same.

I'll let someone else who knows how to actually retrieve the information answer though.

Whoops - missed the part about it being an SD card! However, from my experience it DOES matter which manufacturer since each has their own type of recovery program. I use SunPak and they include a recovery program with their cards. I have had situations in which this software has saved the day when either the card or card reader has malfunctioned and I have been unable to retrieve my images any other way. Sorry for the confusion.
