Canon EOS Rebel The shutter is staying closed when I take picture and will not open until I click to take another picture.

Hmmm, could it be the mirror lockup feature that you are seeing? Not sure which model your Rebel is, but you might check your user's manual to see if it has this feature and how to turn it on/off.

Check to see if the Shutter Time Delay was accidentally turned on

Cindy, as Bobby said, likely mirror lockup is selected. The first time you press the shutter, no picture is taken--just the mirror locks in the up position. This is used when it is imperative all vibration is minimal. It takes a second shutter press to actually take the photo. John

Rebel doesn't have lock up feature, If the camera has a faulty shutter or if the pop up flash is blocked or not raising when it is called for you will get this error. if you have a Rebel over ten years old you may have a sticky shutter caused by a deteriorated bumper look for small traces of it smeared on the blades of shutter.

Chuck, that blanket statement is not true. We don't know which Rebel she has. The Rebel T2, XT, XTi all have mirror lockup. The K2 and earlier do not. We need a bit more information to be sure what the problem is.
