Camera not detecting CF card

I have an SLR type Olympus E-20N digital and I can use both a CF card or a Smart Media card. When I place the CF card in the slot, the screen shows there is no card in the camera. What could be the cause of this?

Thank you.

The E-20N LCD will only display "SM" or "CF" depending on which has been selected to write files. It won't display both at the same time. If a Smart Media card is already installed, and one then installs a CF card, then the display will not change unless the user selects the CF card with the SM/CF button and main dial. (p. 129 of the manual)

Has the CF card been formatted in the camera (not on computer or other camera)? page 158.

Yes, I am well aware of the fact that only one or the other card can be used or that one or the other will be displayed on the LCD. The CF card is formatted to the camera. A message, "no card", flashes on the LCD when the card is indeed in the slot.

Sorry, no offense intended. It's usually impossible to tell from a short question what is a person's level of experience and what remedies have already been tried. The next step is equally obvious. Try another CF card, if it works, the first is faulty. If not, then the camera will need service. Either a faulty switch/sensor in the CF slot or maybe the pins have come loose or broken.
