CAnon 100-400mm IS Concerns

I just purchased a Canon 100-400MM IS L lens, and today I noticed that when I attach the lens to my 20D and look up to the bright sky I see what appears to be the equivelent of digital noise in the viewfinder. I don't understand it, but it is clearly a grainy looking image in the view finder. I havben't looked at my images yet to see if they to share the graininess. Has anyone heard of this or know whom I might aske, I know if I contact Canon, they are going to want me to send it in and not try to answer my questions... Please respond, or emaill me at jeffmayne@4adesignstudio.com if you have any ideas...
Jeff

I don't see it in my 70-200mm L lens, or my 14-40mm L lens. It also appears that the screen is darker than usual. I checked the pictures I took and it does not appear to effect the quality of the pic.

The 100-400 has maximum aperture of just f/4.5-5.6. That is about 1 stop less (ie. 1/2 the light) than the f/4 of the 17-40 f/4L (and 70-200 f/4L) and 2 stops less (1/4 the light) if the 70-200 is f/2.8. So it's normal that the viewfinder appear dimmer, and the matte texture of the focusing screen be more apparent.

I don't think Jeff should be seeing anything such as he describes. I have Nikon gear so I can't compare in that regard, but I've never seen anything like he describes through the viewfinder. Jeff, where did you get the lens? You should be able to exchange it if you haven't had it too long.

Unfortunately, I bought it off of Ebay through a private seller. I have the warranty card but have not filled it out yet. I am not sure what the process is for the lens, but I have sent my Canon XL1 in and had it repaired and it was an horrible experience. And I am not sure that because I have a smaller aperture that it should make my viewfinder darker and grainy. I have the 70-200mm L lens with a max aerture of f2.8 and when I turn it down to 5.6 or more my viewfinder does not get darker. It appears that it may be something in the electronics of the lens that is creating the noise, but first I am going to find someone in my area with a Canon Digital and try it on their camera... I also appreciate all of the responses, keep um comming, maybe we can get this figured out. I figured that there may be some one else with a 20D and a 100-400mm IS L lens that maybe could shed the light on the subject.
Happy Holidays,
Jeff

The viewfinder dosen't get darker because the diaphram dosen't close to 5.6 until you take the picture. It will close down with the depth of field preview button.
