Lens Hunting during Auto Focus

I have a Canon Rebel XT using a Canon 28-135mm IS lens. When I set it to Auto Focus, in any mode, the lens hunts to focus back and forth, back and forth and never really gets a lock on the focus. My AF mode is AI Servo and my metering mode is Evaluative (although I've tried all combinations of settings). Even with flash the lense still seems to hunt. I've attached my 430EX Speedlite and I still get the same problem. I've also had the same problem outdoors. I know lenses hunt in low light but it seems that there is enough light for the shot. I usually have to take it off of AF mode and set it for manual. I get good clear shots in MF so why does my AF unable to get a good lock?

Try setting the AF mode to One-Shot in dim light. In AI Servo the speedlight's AF assist light is disabled.

If you think there is plenty of light, take off the lens and check the bottom of the mirror box in the camera. There may be some dust/lint covering the little AF sensors that are located there. Use a clean blower-brush to gently clean. Avoid touching or moving the mirror.
