Photography Question

Holly Marie Spoonley

I see spots thru my viewfinder

Okay I have a Minolta Maxxum Qt si and recently I have noticed spots when I look thru the viewfinder. I have cleaned the lens, the viewfinder, and also dusted the mirror reflector behind the lens. I still see the spots. I have also changed my lens to test the theory of it being inside the lens. However, even with a lens switch the spots remain. I have not received my prints from my film processing as of yet, so I don't know if it shows up on the prints. Does anyone know what I missing that I can try to clean to get rid of the spots?

Dust. Dosen't affect the picture. But if you want it out of there, send it off to a shop so they can clean it by taking the focusing screen out.

Any suggestions where I can send my camera to for the cleaning? I live in Central Florida.

Look on your manual and see if it list certified Minolta service center that you can send it to or go to. If not, look for camera stores near by, which will usually send it off anyway.
But it wouldn't really be worth the wait nor the money to pay for it, because it has no affect on your prints being on the focusing screen.

If it's just dust on the mirror, you may be able to """VVEERRYY CCAARREEFFUULLLLYY""" Clean it out with a soft bristle blower brush. If you see peices of what looks like black foam, It's time for a repair shop. That will be the seal around the mirror going bad. If this is the case, the rest of the seals are probably in the same condition. You can contact B&H Photo (www.bhphotovideo.com) or Porter's camera (www.porters.com) to get repair estimates. There are many other repair centers, but most have slipped my (old age) mind right now.

Have fun and keep shooting,
Mark H.

Well I haven't received prints as of yet that I have shot recently. I should get them any day now. Hopefully the spots are not on the prints. I have cleaned t he mirror with a bristle blower brush and I still see the spots. I thought maybe they could be in the viewfinder, but wasn't sure. I guess I will have to take it to a repair shop to find out. It absolutley annoys me when I look thru the viewfinder to take a picture.

THANK YOU to Mark H., Gregory L., and Samuel S. for your advice!

I agree that the spots are more than likely on your focusing screen.

They will not affect the images you take and they are nothing more than an annoyance at best.
