Canon Powershot S3 IS shutting down

I just bought the Canon Powershot S3 IS camera about 4 days ago and just started having a problem with it. It works just fine, but today after I took an image, it shut down on me. The camera does not have the low battery display up and no error message is displayed. I have Duracell AA batteries in it. They were brand-new and were put in 2 days ago. The shots I did today were in sunlight and no flash fired. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Typical of alkaline batteries. Even new/fresh, they cannot provide enough current fast enough to power a digital camera. Use high capacity NiCad or NiMH rechargeables instead. They will provide usable power longer than alkalines, and are much less expensive in the long run.

Thanks for your response, Jon. Last night, I bought the NiMH batteries. I tried them in the camera this morning and it does work a lot faster and more efficient than with the alkalines. I don't know why they would design this type of camera for AA's! But, it's a handy camera to take with me when I can't take my 20D!! Thanks, again!!

  Hi Pat,

If you ask me, two days of alkaline batteries in a digital camera is amazing! But really, you do need the AA NiMH batteries. The cameras are made like that so they can accept both NiMH batteries and alkaline (and other types of AAs). This way, if your rechargeables die on you on a trip and you can't recharge, you can easily buy some regular alkalines at a store and keep shooting.

Amazon features this super high capacity (2900 mAh) 4 pack of rechargeable AA by Power2000.

I tried some different companies, and I love Opteka's very high capacity (2700 mAh) and super-quick rechargeable batteries.

I tried the camera yesterday using the NiMH batteries and it worked very well, with no problems. I got the 2500 mAh batteries from Energizer...got them at Wal-mart and didn't have to wait for delivery!! Thanks for your help Ariel. I appreciate it!!

Kind of wish camera companies didn't use AA batteries!!!
