Photography Question

No RAW in digital rebel?

I wanted to shoot in RAW with my digital rebel but when I go to the menu to change it, it doesn't offer it! Am I doing something raw or does it not have it?

I have a Digital Rebel and just started shooting RAW a few months ago. It is at the very bottom of the list and you have to be out of the auto modes. You need to be in AV, TV or Manual to shoot RAW. I really like shooting in RAW as I found that I could really control the images much more.

  Greetings,

RAW is the pure data from the digital sensor. The 'digital negative' taken when you take the picture, prior to any adjustments for white balance etc.

The RAW file needs additional processing, either in software that came with the camera or other third party software, like Photoshope. The RAW file gives a lot more flexitibilty in processing than using the JPG formats on the camera. And unlike the coverted JPG file settings on the camera, the RAW file has lost no data, it is what the sensor recorded.

Hope this helps,
Robert

  Mike--

RAW formats are propriatary to the camera; you have to open the files using the software that came with the camera--File Viewer Utility. You can make adjustments to the RAW data--correcting plus or minus about 2 stops, white balance, etc--and then you use File View Utility to convert them to something that other programs can read--ie, JPEG, TIF, etc (Use the command "Convert and Save in File...")

I have a mac and it does not let me install the file viewer. My question is that 3.0 was supposed to recognize raw format, but it's not with mine. I thought I could do my processing with the PS.

  Mike-

Isn't there a Mac version of File viewer utility? Check the Canon website.

I'm remembering now that there is an Adobe plug in for 3.0 (I think) that allows you to convert the canon proprietary RAW format into the Adobe DNG (Digital Negative), a non-propriatary RAW format (like PDF). You can download it at www.adobe.com; do a search for Adobe Digital Negative or Adobe DNG. That should allow you to do you r processing in 3.0.

Try searching for DNG in the 3.0 Help...the website DOES say that it should support it. Also maybe try a general google search on "adobe DNG converter for elements 3.0"

DNG For Mac - Elements 3.0

OK, I checked it out with Elements 3.0 for Windows and it should work the same with Mac.

First, download the updated Adobe Camera Raw for Mac at

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Macintosh

Then, open the zipped file. (It includes the latest Raw converter software AND the Adobe DNG software. And an instruction file.)

Install in Elements 3.0 as per the instructions. (In Windows, it's in C:Program Files, Adobe, Elements 3.0, Plug Ins, File Formats. The Instruction file should provide Mac info.)

Remove the earlier Camera Raw 8bi (or whatever it's called in Mac - first. Now, the new 8bi will be used for the Raw converter in Elements 3.0.

NOTE: Install DNG.exe (or whatever it's called in Mac) to your computer's ** Desktop **.

Status at this point:

1. You will now have the latest Adobe Raw converter program in Elements 3.0.

2. You can now access Adobe DNG converter from your desktop.

If you want to convert RAW files from your camera's RAW format to Adobe DNG format, open the DNG converter from your desktop.

Identify the file folder where you have RAW files that you want converted to the DNG (raw) format.

(For practise, create a new folder and move a couple of RAW files from your camera to that folder.)

Click on Convert.

DNG Converter will now convert those files from the Canon (or other camera brand) RAW format to the Adobe DNG (Raw) format.

You can now open the DNG files with Elements 3.0. (The Raw converter software in Elements 3.0 will open because it identifies any DNG file as a Raw format file.)

Adjust the image until it looks perfect and Save As TIF.

You will now have the original Raw file that your camera generated. You can delete that one if you wish, because you will also have the DNG (raw) format file.

And you'll have a TIFF file that you created by converting the DNG file.

This is not simple because it requires correct installation, but anyone with a bit of computer expertise can do it in a couple of minutes.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! Peter Burian

Converting RAW files to Adobe DNG format in Photoshop CS

Anyone who owns CS should follow the
same procedure as outlined above for Elements 3.0 owners.

These are the Instructions that Adobe provides for Windows installation. The same process is used for Elements 3.0 owners.

(I don't have a Mac so do not know what instructions they provide for Mac.)

1. Exit Photoshop CS.

2. Open My Computer.

3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).

4. Navigate to Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats.

If you have the Creative Suite, navigate to:
Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats.

5. Move the existing Camera Raw 8.bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.

6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 4.

7. Launch Photoshop CS.

NOTE: Also remember to copy the Adobe Converter DNG.exe to your desktop

Then, you will be able to access that anytime, easily, if you want to convert RAW files generated by your camera to DNG format raw files.

  Mike:

You must also save a copy to the Photoshop Plug-ins File Format folder.

I will try to Edit my previous posts to mention this fact.

I did so and have absolutely no problem opening DNG files in Elements 3.0 and CS.

NOTE: Also be sure to transfer a copy of the DNG Converter.exe to the Photoshop Plug In > File Formats folder.

Sorry, that was not clear in my previous notes. (I have no way to Edit them to make this correction.)

Mike: I have no idea why it does not work for you.

Did you also remember to remove the old Camera Raw 8.bi plug-in and install the new one in its place? (The new one includes DNG support.)

When I open the dng converter I can access the folder that the raw file is in but I cant access the actual raw file. It's gray and I can't click on it. By the way thank you very much for the help.

  Mike:

That is exactly how it works.

When you open it, the software just wants you to identify ** where ** your RAW format files are.

Once you do so, it will seek out that file and convert all of them to the DNG format, automatically.

You should then be able to open any of those DNG files in Elements 3.0 or Photoshop CS.

Mike: Put some RAW fornat files in a new folder in your computer, such as C: RAW TEST

Open DNG.exe

When you open it, the software just wants you to identify ** where ** your RAW format files are. C: RAW TEST in this example.

Once you do so, it will seek out the RAW files in that folder. It will convert all of them to the DNG format, automatically.

Close the DNG software.

Open Photoshop and go to the C:RAW TEST folder. Photoshop should now be able to open the DNG format files.

One more time...In photoshop, I went to Edit,Preferences,Plug-Ins,Additional Plug-ins and browse until you find the file name (c:\programs\adobe\photoshopcs\plugins\file format) and pick that file then apply. That fixed my problem, don't know if that will help you.
