How to use Flash with Manual Modes

I have a Canon EOS10D and a Canon 550 flash. I am not sure how to set the flash to get the proper exposure in AV mode. Or do I need to set the speed first and let the TTL give me the correct aperture?

Use with the 550EX is outlined in the 10D user manual, beginning on page 102. There is more information at http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/, that applies to all EOS cameras, film or digital.

The 550EX can be used with auto E-TTL/TTL flash control in all exposure modes, including Tv, Av, or M. Tv, Av, and M are balanced fill-flash modes (also called slow-sync mode). The meter reads the ambient light only and sets aperture or shutter speed accordingly. The speedlight provides fill light, enough for the near subject only. If you want to maintain the max x-sync speed (1/200) in Av mode, set CF-3 to "1". In bright ambient light situations, if you want to dial in your own flash exposure compensation instead of relying on the E-TTL algorithm, then set CF-14 to "1". The flash to subject distance scale will be displayed on the 550EX. If your subject is within that range you will get good exposure. If it closer the flash will overexpose it, if farther the flash will be ineffective.

Jon, Thank you for your explanation. If I understand this correctly, I was having difficulty with this because when I set the aperture, the speed assigned on AV mode was too slow to hand hold the camera. Therefore, I should be settiing the custom function to CF-3 to maintain the 1/200 speed?

Yes. If you find 1/200 leaves the background too dark, then you can switch to M and in addition to specifying the aperture as you are in Av you can set an intermediate shutter speed of say 1/60 or 1/90.

Thank you once again. I am reading in detail the link you sent me to photonotes. It's very helpful in understanding flash exposure problems.
