Unless you plan to upgrade later to one of Canon's current model film or digital SLRs, the 540EZ is a better match for your EOS 5 than the 550EX. The 550EX has features that cannot be utilized by your current body, such as E-TTL, FEL, and FP high speed flash sync.

The Metz 45 CL-4 is enough different that I wouldn't term one or the other "better." It depends on how you wish to use it. The 45 CL-4 is a "potato masher"-style speedlight, much larger and mounted to the side whereas the 540EZ is a smaller hot-shoe mounted speedlight. It is more directly comparable to Canon's 480EG speedlight.
