night photography

I recently purchased a Canon Rebel 2000 (28-80mm lens) so I am still in the process of learning all the technical features of this camera. I would like to try photographing the early night sky. (moonrise, bright planets, etc.) Is this possible with my camera? What manual settings would I need to set to achieve good pics? Thanks...

Joe,its best you use a VERY SENSITIVE print film such as Portra 800 from Kodak,Fujicolor Superia 800 ( or Press 800)or NPZ 800. Definitely bring a tripod along, it is best when using your camera in a time-exposure mode.
