Indoor Portrait Lighting

I would like to begin taking indoor portraits. I have a Nikon N65. I need any advice on continuous lighting vs. flash, brands to look at, what activates the off-camera lights, film use with each type. This is broad, but looking at the other questions and answers for other question, I feel like I can get good help.

Need film balanced for what ever light type you're using. Flash is daylight balanced, you need tungsten balanced film for continuous lights. Although there are some type of lights that are continuous and daylight balanced, but I can't remember the name of them.
Flash usually gives you a brighter more powerful source, continuous lets yous see how things look before hand.
Off camera lights can be activated with sync cords, radio slave, flash-activated slaves, infra-red slave.
