how to find a good basic guide book for 35 mm slrs

I am a typical family guy who takes pictures occasionally on vacation or at special events with the kids, family, etc. Unfortunately, when I pick the camera up I tend to forget some of the basics. The pictures come out good on my old Nikon N2020 AF, but when I get the pictures back I just wish I had some more basic knowledge that I could have remembered when it came time to take the pictures. I just paid $165.00 to a large camera store who sent the camera out because several features on the camera were not working properly as the camera had sat it its case for a couple of years. I now would love to find a book, manual, instruction guide (other than the one that comes with the camera) that gives me some good basic understanding about aperture, shutter speed, lighting, flash photography, etc. There are so many books available. I would like to get the book not on-line but at Barnes and Noble or Borders so that I could review it before buying it. I would love some suggestions. Thank you.

Kodak offers a good basic book, available at camera stores. Jim, here at betterphoto also offers a book geared toward autofocus cameras. Check flea markets for the Time-Life Photography series. The principles of exposure remain the same, even if you choose to let the camer's microcomputer do it all for you. It's still good to be able to second guess the automation and to know what it is doing. We congratulate you for wanting to do photography right. For me, it's hard to think of a Nikon N2020 as being old.

Even though the "for dummies" books have been over done, "Photography for dummies" is very basic with easy to follow tips and good advice. It's a great book for someone who doesn't want to "study". Available at Barnes and Noble.
