About three blocks from Sunday's Chili Cook-Off contest in Fishtown, we passed a man who was on his knees painting a fire hydrant in Easter Colors. It was on Coral Street, just over the neighborhood line in Kensington.
----
We circled around the blighted area, and then stopped to talk with the man.
The entire neighborhood was decorated for Easter, with several wall murals depicting grief for a local hero who had been gunned down. But there was more--much more.
--------
This wall overlooks a vacant lot (one of the biggest problems besetting the city). Dennis painted it, honoring ALL the people in his memory who have died tragically in the neighborhood. He is 61 years old and has lived here since birth!
---
He had cleaned up the trash in the lot, and filled it with items depicting hope--or the lack of it. There's a sign painted on rotting wood at the base of a fence, obscured by tall grass. It says "Garden of Hope."

Now if somebody would just start to fix it up, maybe it would spread "delight" instead of "blight".

You certainly getting to see parts of the city not included on the Chamber of Commerce tour.:) It's sad to see neighborhoods fall into disrepair. They can be revived (I live in one that has been restored) but it takes time and a lot of work.

Excellent find and capture here Michelle!!

This is the same sort of thing which is happening in our city, with all the empty spaces created by the earthquakes and demolitions. People coming up with ideas to fill the spaces. Much better idea to brighten it up until they are built on again. An uplifting image Michelle.

Beautiful urban find and story, Michelle. It looks like a gate at the very bottom left? Really gives it some scale...
